What is a state benefit? There are many definitions of state benefits, ranging from “money given by the government to people who do not have enough money to live on” or more in keeping with today’s society: state benefits are various sums of money paid by the Government to people in certain circumstances to meet their day to day living needs. They exist to make sure no one falls below a minimum standard of living.

Currently there are nearly 40 different types of state benefits that are available to those who meet the criteria, ranging from cold weather payments to child benefit and for those who may be ill or sick employment support allowance or personal independence payments.

The various different types of benefits are administered by different government agencies including Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, local councils and the Department of Work and Pensions.
